I often visit a place where water accumulate and merge in the form of rapids, filling a small yet deep basin. It is located near Apsley, Ontario. Because of its formation, it is aptly named "The Gut". It is in an alcove of sorts surrounded by trees and plant life indigenous to its location. Trees that seemingly stand bent in a circle of protection, also serve to shade most of the area. Still, a collection of sun rays manage to make its way through to reflect off the waters and cast shadows on the trees. Only nature itself could manifest such a phenomenon.
One weekend, I brought a friend and her family down the long trek of winding stone path that leads there. Upon our arrival we explored the area and together we became immersed in what it offered us. The children were unusually quiet.
In retrospect, it appears that their calm stemmed from a sense of respect towards their surroundings.
"The Gut" took on a presence of its own. A presence we all seemed to acknowledge. This experience inspired the painting "River Talk". How wonderful it is to know that sometimes when the river talks, we on occasion, stop and listen.
